Alina Bliumis and Jeff Bliumis

Alina, who is from Minsk, Belarus, and Jeff, who is from Chisinau, Moldova, both moved to New York and graduated from the School of Visual Arts (Alina, 1999) and Columbia University (Jeff, 1980), respectively.

Their experience of moving to a new country has become a starting point for exploring their identities as artists and an important source of inspiration for their work.

They create works using research-based methods that address social and political themes, developing them into series. As a result, many projects are ongoing over the long term, expanding the possibilities of visual expression through multiple media.

Crossing physical, political, and social “boundaries” has been a consistent focus throughout their careers. His creative process always involves questioning relationships such as “inside and outside,” “boundary and center,” and “other and norm,” and is based on the perspective of “being outside (externality).”

By transforming political issues into aesthetic experiences, he brings themes such as “disconnection” and “otherness” into everyday life, aiming to visualize the sense of alienation and cracks that lie beneath.
