Project expansion in six main areas of Chiba City

For the Chiba City Arts Triennale 2025, cultural creation bases ("arts fields") will be set up throughout Chiba City where participatory art projects will be carried out. "Areas" refers to where bases and projects are particularly concentrated. *Six areas have been set as the main bases for the festival. With future art festivals, the aim is to expand the areas and bases to various parts of Chiba City.

*However, there are some projects that will set up bases outside of the areas mentioned above as well as projects that go cross over multiple areas.

1

Around Chiba Station

Located in Chuo-ku, Chiba City, the area is centered around the terminal station, JR Chiba Station. It is a bustling area filled with department stores, shops, restaurants, public facilities, cultural facilities, offices, large condominiums, and other buildings rooted in people's daily living and culture.
The Chiba City Arts Triennale 2025 will develop art projects at Sogo Chiba, a department store with deep roots in the community, at public facilities, at a room in a local building, etc., creating opportunities for many people to take part in the art festival while supporting to maintain the well-being of the affluent city.

2

Ichibacho/Inohana area

Located near the Chiba Prefectural Government Office, this area once flourished as the center of Chiba City. In addition to privately owned businesses, the area is home to the Chiba Prefectural Library, with its stately modern architecture, and the Chiba City Folk Museum (commonly known as Chiba Castle), which is modeled after a castle tower. Although the area faces the challenge of generational change, it is an area with a strong sense of history. In vacant storefronts, several artists have set up their production bases.
The Chiba City Arts Triennale 2025 aims to revitalize the area and create new relationships by renovating the historic stores to form a cultural hub, where artists can take on the challenge of new forms of expression while respecting the local history and culture.

3

Around Chiba City Hall

The area around the City Hall is surrounded by harbors and parks with great views. In particular, the new City Hall building, which opened in 2023, was created as a new public facility designed by architect Kengo Kuma.
It is a new type of public facility that not only acts as a public service desk for citizens but also as a community space for various uses. In addition, the space above National Highway 357, which is close to the city hall, is also being used for social experiments to create activities in the city.
The Chiba City Arts Triennale 2025 will reach and encourage people who have not been attracted to public facilities and spaces in the past to visit on this occasion, creating new experiences and activities.

4

Nishi-Chiba area

The Nishi-Chiba area, consisting of the areas around JR Nishi-Chiba Station and Keisei Midoridai Station, is an academic area with many educational institutions, from kindergartens to universities and vocational colleges.
It is also attracting attention as an area where bottom-up urban development activities are thriving with an increasing number of unique shops, outdoor Third Spaces for locals, public art works, and company offices.
The Chiba City Arts Triennale 2025 will take advantage of the cultural hubs and local networks already existing in Nishi-Chiba to develop participatory art projects that speak to a wider range of people to further revitalize the region.

5

Around Chiba Park

Chiba Park is a 16-hectare comprehensive park where visitors can enjoy nature in all seasons, as well as boating and various sports. It is also a popular site where the ancient lotus “Ooga lotus,” a natural treasure designated by the prefecture, is cultivated and attracts many visitors during the blooming season. Full list of bases

In the "The Chiba City Arts Triennale 2025", artists will reimagine the small crevices of the city like the vacant stores and public spaces that are often overlooked and buried in the mundanities of life and use them as bases for art projects. These bases for cultural creation will not only serve as activity sites during the Triennale, but we also aim that they will be a part of the daily lives of the citizens long after the period of the Triennale.
