Chiba City Museum of Art

Around Chiba Station

The Chiba City Museum of Art opened on November 3, 1995, as part of a complex with the Chuo Ward Office in a corner of Chiba City’s central business district. The museum building was designed to envelop one of the city’s few remaining pre-war structures (the former Kawasaki Bank Chiba Branch) within a new structure, resonating with the museum’s mission to preserve history and culture and connect it to future generations.
The collection policy forming the backbone of the museum centers on three pillars: “Japanese paintings and prints from the late Edo period to the modern era,” “contemporary art from 1945 onward,” and “works connected to Chiba City and the Boso region, where the museum is located.” Using these three points as the core of its activities, the museum has held exhibitions with unique perspectives, collaborating with partners both domestically and internationally.
Then, in July 2020, marking its 25th anniversary, the entire building underwent expansion and renovation to reopen as the museum. Beyond the existing exhibition spaces, new areas were added: a permanent exhibition room showcasing highlights from the Chiba City Museum of Art’s esteemed collection; an atelier for participatory and experiential artist projects; and an open, inviting library stocked with accessible books about art. These additions created more spaces where anyone can engage with art anytime. (Translated from the official website)
