Observation of Locality in Changes of Landscape / tetogu
“Dig in the Future! Pottery Zoological Park” Exhibition
September 19 (Fri) - November 24 (Mon,substitue holiday), 2025
Artist collective “tetogu” is working on a project entitled “Observation of Locality in Changes of Landscape” in Chiba City Arts Triennale 2025. In this project, based on the earthenware culture of Chiba, participants make earthenware works using clay collected in Chiba and fire them. It is an art project which assumes that these earthenware will be dug up after 10,000 years. The project aims to rebuild lifestyle and landscape through landscape design using locally unique materials and manual work, to cast light on the loss of culture due to the modern homogenized townscape design and dependence on distributions.
As part of this project, workshops were held in Chiba Zoological Park from August to September 2025. In the past, Jomon people lived at the Chiba Zoological Park site and it stands on the actual ruins where many earthenwares and clay images were excavated. At Chiba Zoological Park, a stratum of past activities by various creatures existed, once by people and now by animals. We dug up clay there, made and fired the earthenware using the clay for 3 days.
DAY 1 : Clay collection Digging ground with a shovel. Finding clay layers and collect clay.
DAY 2: Clay molding Making earthenware of favorite animals and motifs using collected clay.
DAY 3: Firing Fire works made with clay outdoors.
Completed works of participants are exhibited on the second floor of the Animal Science Museum in Chiba Zoological Park. Enjoy seeing them when you visit the zoological park.
