Artist Shi Yuxin believes that games are an important means of connecting with others and an indispensable aspect of daily life. The human desire to play games, she says, stem from a fundamental instinct, and games serve to bridge and build relationships between people.

Shi Yuxin’s previous practice includes the City Games project, which she carried out in urban areas in China. The project aimed to create new relationships between people and buildings in public space, establishing temporary “game worlds” in urban neighborhoods rich with history. These improvised games unfolded in the city, from playing chess with strangers on the street to transforming a road into an impromptu playing area, and conjuring up an original game with a pair of trash cans.

At Chiba City Arts Triennale 2025, Shi Yuxin aims to re-energize urban spaces by immersing herself in the local community through research, uncovering the creativity hidden in the ordinary lives of residents, and taking inspiration from that to design new games.

In Chiba City Game Week, small games are held in various locations around the city across several periods. By participating in these games as players, locals discover new meaning in familiar spaces and the everyday landscape.
