The exhibition Chiba Penpen Saisyuki (Collection of Pieces in Chiba) is a result presentation of the art project “Embody Ephemeral Chiba” by artist Sayoko Suwabe. Workshop “Let’s Share the Form of Present Chiba!” was held, which combines a town walking tour and the collection of pieces as participants see the history recorded in photos in Chiba. Uneven surfaces, scratches, joints of stone pavement, dried-out crabs, nuts on the ground, soil dust – participants discovered each of the traces curved by someone, sometime and somewhere and touched, mold with clay and shared them.

National road once attracted people with clam digging and filled with the smell of seaweed

These memories are still around us and have the power of clear images because of the people who passed over the baton of memories. What kind of shapes and warmth were there at the time?

At the venue, 3D artworks which were quenched on the ground of Showa-no-Mori (Showa Forest Park) will be displayed after the workshop.

These works were placed in a digged hole and quenched by firing plants. Warmth of soot and soil can be felt in the forms.

They pick up pieces of scenery which could be missed easily and gently remind memories of the town.

They come and go between the past and the future by bringing layers of different times on the surface.

Works created through the workshop are silent records but speak out eloquently as they are, connect each other and produce a new relationship at the place.

In the exhibition, people can learn and experience individual points towards a city and the borderline between an urban area and nature through the roughness and warmth of works lying on a large seine expressing the texture and weight of soil and stones.

The main venue is approximately a 3-minute walk from the Chiba Shrine Former Burning Site (venue for Yohei Chimura’s “Gorogoro no Fukei 2025_Chiba City”).
