Words of Light / Nozomi Suzuki
Words of Light
September 19 (Fri) – November 24 (Mon, substitute holiday), 2025
“Words of light” is a term that William Henry Fox Talbot used to express the relationship between photography and the nature from which photography originates, before spontaneous images captured by light came to be called photographs.
In our daily lives, there are objects that have holes in them due to the various ways we use them, their design, the activities of living creatures, or simply defects. Though ordinarily masked by other light, the images of light that are joined by the pinhole projection phenomenon (the principle of the pinhole camera) that occurs in these holes certainly exist in the here and now. It is as if the light is whispering a soliloquy without anyone noticing.
This exhibition features a series of works by artist Nozomi Suzuki, created in collaboration with local residents in Chiba City. Together, they explored holes throughout the city where the pinhole projection phenomenon occurs—though the openings are slightly too large to be considered true pinholes. The resulting images, or “words of light,” have been captured on various photosensitive materials, offering a quiet visual translation through the medium of photography. Please come and take a look.
