33 years are a cycle of the alternation of generations. 66 years for 2 generations and 99 years for 3 generations. Artist Hiroshi Fuji’s daughter was born 33 years ago in 1992, just before the digital culture such as the Internet and smart phones flourished. Hiroshi was born in 1960, 33 years before then, when plastic products, electrical products and cars started to popularize, and air pollution and marine pollution began concurrently.

World’s distributions changed significantly in the two generations and mass products and information changed our lifestyle. While science and technology have rapidly advanced and developed people’s life, impacts of waste from our life have caused huge environmental changes such as air pollution from exhaust gas, marine pollution from discharged water and catastrophic disasters from climate changes, which are also global issues.

“In 2058, 33 years from now when our children will play active roles, what will the local communities be like?” Hiroshi focused on where waste will go after urban systems, products and energy, which have been created by now, and have created works based on the theme. How are these handed down to the next generation, and what kind of circulation systems will they be returned to? He would like to explore various possibilities about such waste in the future.

In relation to this project, in Chiba City Arts Triennale 2025,  “Kaekko Bazaar” events where children exchange unused toys have been held since last year in several places in Chiba City. In this exhibition, “Pond of the Frogs” which was created using plastic materials collected in previous activities is displayed at Sencity Tower next to Chiba Station.

More details

Hiroshi Fuji

Born in Kagoshima in 1960. While he was in Kyoto City University of Arts, he devoted himself to drama. After working as a tutor in Papua New Guinea National Arts School and an urban design consultant in Tokyo, he practiced project-based artistic expressions across Japan. In 1992, he received the grand prize for Japan Art Scholarship at “2025 Pond of the Frogs Symposium.” He has been involved in many international art projects at home and abroad including SITE Santa Fe Biennale, Setouchi International Art Festival, etc. Other works are “101 Skinny Dogs” created from pillars of dismantled houses, “Stories of Rice Frogs” started from rice worth a month’s salary, “Vinyl Plastics Connection” which accumulates household waste materials, “Kaekko” and “Jurassic Plastic” which use unused toys, “Hachijuro Fujishima” which makes a fictional key person, etc. Currently Professor at Akita University of Art after serving as Director of Towada Art Center.
