STATION to STATION / Slow Art Collective
STATION to STATION
September 19 (Fri) - November 24 (Mon, substitute holiday), 2025
The Slow Art Collective participatory project, in which about 3,000 people participated during the pre-session of Chiba City Arts Triennale 2025 (March to April 2024), will be held at Chiba Urban Monorail Chiba Station.
Works of Slow Art Collective are always in harmony with the existing townscape and architectural space through mutual contact with the places of venue. They aim to transfer the space into a place where people gather by installing a variable temporary structure using natural materials such as bamboo.
The structure features the fact that it will grow into an ornamental profile with a volume as people who participate in the project braid strings, a material with a high degree of freedom in creation, into the bamboo structure and make knots. Instruments installed in the structure can produce a sound and a mechanism which automatically produces a sound will be incorporated.
Works of Slow Art Collective, developed in various environments in Tokyo, Nagoya, Melbourne and Queensland, produced different meanings and values in each place. In Tokyo, the space became a large art shrine. In the suburb of Melbourne, the venue functioned as a place for a local Turkish immigrant family to hand down their braiding culture. In a small countryside town of Queensland, the place provided a space for relaxation for residents who usually don’t go out. The artist believes that the reason why these experiences unique to the area are created is that a process to share time and space exists there while participants tie a string with a free mind to become part of the artwork.
“Slow Art,” which is performed in this project, will grow into an artwork of coexistence between artists and local people through creating and playing together with a feeling that they are connected to the local community. It is exciting to see what kind of works will be created at Chiba Urban Monorail Chiba Station. Feel free to participate in the project!
