Digging Workshop
July 26, 2025/ July 27, 2025 / August 16, 2025 /August 17, 2025
Gather in an ordinary vacant lot in a residential neighborhood, pick up shovels, and dig a hole together, sweating as you work. This workshop invites you to peek into the past that lies beneath our present lives and imagine the future from there. Why not join us in digging a hole that connects the past and the future in the heart of the city?
Digging holes in the city center, thinking about the past and the future
In the city of Chiba, pottery dating back 5,000 years has been unearthed. This means that the lives of people from long ago still quietly exist beneath this very spot today. Perhaps, without realizing it, we are standing between the past and the future.
The act of digging into the earth allows us to touch the landscapes, cultures, and the flow of time that once existed in this land. At the same time, it is an opportunity to reflect anew on the memories that remain in the land where we stand, the form of our current lives, and the future that will continue beyond us.
From the landscape that exists here and now, to the ever-changing scenery of the future. With the hope that our hands and connections may leave something behind in between, we dig.
The excavated holes will be displayed as archaeological sites during a concentrated exhibition and presentation period.
Observation of Locality in Changes of Landscape
This project is an installation based on Chiba’s pottery culture, in which pottery is made using Chiba clay and fired in an open kiln, with the intention that it will be excavated 10,000 years later. In response to the homogenization of modern urban development and the loss of culture due to dependence on distribution, this project aims to reconstruct life and landscape through the use of locally sourced materials and manual labor.
