「About Conversations」Workshop

As part of Yuta Maejima’s project “About Conversations” at the Chiba International Art Festival 2025, we will hold a workshop. We look forward to your participation.

About the workshop

In this workshop, participants will pair up and engage in conversation. The rule is to place a handkerchief between yourselves and draw on it while talking. There is no set theme for the conversation.
Whether you want to talk to someone, have someone listen to you, chat with an artist, enjoy talking, find it challenging to speak, or simply came across this announcement by chance, everyone is welcome to join. Please feel free to participate.

About「About Conversations」

A project that involves dialogue and marking its traces with flags.
In the workshop, participants freely talk with each other while “scribbling” on cloth or handkerchiefs. Through the workshop, the artist connects the ‘scribbles’ = “traces of dialogue” left on the cloth, turning them into flags. Meeting with one’s own body, witnessing with one’s own eyes, sharing time and space, and engaging in dialogue. Through this project, we reflect on these concepts.

The handkerchiefs you doodle on during the workshop will become part of the artwork and cannot be taken home.

Heatstroke Prevention Measures

Please take measures to prevent heatstroke by staying hydrated and wearing a hat, etc., according to the environment. If you feel unwell, please notify a nearby staff member.

Photography and Video Recording

Photography and video recording will be conducted on the day for promotional and record-keeping purposes. Media outlets may also conduct interviews and filming. Photographs and videos taken may be published on the Chiba International Art Festival website, social media, brochures, and other promotional materials, as well as on television, magazines, and other media. We kindly ask for your understanding in advance.

About Conversations

A project to put up flags with traces of conversations written. People who meet in the workshop have free conversations. They scribble on a cloth or a handkerchief while they talk. These scribbles can be notes of interesting comments from conversations, or doodles of diagrams or images to show what they would like to say to others. Scribbles and doodles – ”traces of conversations” left on clothes through the workshop will be combined by the artist to make flags. Conversation workshops are held at several places in Chiba. Traces of conversations held at each place will be displayed on flags at the place. Visitors witness various conversations at different places by seeing the flags placed in several places during the event. The project lets people think about going to see someone in person, witnessing something with their own eyes, sharing time and space and having conversations with others. Yuta Maejima

Withdrawn from the Department of Architecture, School of Creative Science and Engineering, Waseda University (2024). As of 2025, he is enrolled in the Oil Painting Course, Department of Painting, Tokyo University of the Arts. Currently working on cross-sectional production and development of artworks and projects between different media and fields, based mainly on the subject of communications and creation of space. Main works are “About Conversations,” a project displaying flags with traces of conversations with others on rooftops in town and the “Sand Hill” action, where the artist continues to make a sand hill on the beach for 10 days. He has been producing music since 2019.
